Geoff Harrison - 'Time Passages'

Wednesday 23 August - Sunday 10 September 2017

This series of works is based on views of inner Melbourne from a small plot of crown land above the Yarra Boulevard in Kew. They represent the changing relationship Harrison has with this city where he was born and raised.

The city has grown almost beyond recognition since Harrison moved to rural Victoria in the early 2000s due to economic pressures. Viewing inner Melbourne from this vantage point enables a more contemplative relationship to be developed with the changes that have taken place. In a world obsessed with productivity, it can be refreshing to stand on this lonely hilltop where status and possessions mean nothing, and instead enjoy the opportunity to investigate the contents of our own mind.

That the former Willsmere Psychiatric Hospital appears in this series references back to an earlier series of his work based around abandoned psychiatric hospitals and is a metaphor for a less caring, more go-getting society.
